We believe Individuals living with dementia and their care partners deserve to know about expert insights, proven strategies, and creative approaches that foster meaningful engagement and improve quality of life. To that end our Hub offers this a bookshelf of publications that move the arrow in the same direction—books by Board Members and Grantees, and Program Guidebooks based on Grantees’ excellent program development and assessment.

We are blind

There is a well-known Indian story of five blind men describing an elephant. One puts
his arms around the elephant’s leg saying “An elephant is like a tree.” The man holding
on to the elephant’s tail—“like a snake.” The flapping ear: “like a palm tree.” The
trunk—“like a hose.” The whole body—“like a wall”. Each is absolutely correct; he just lacks the full-picture. For that they all need the others and their perspectives—just like us,

The I’m Still Here Foundation is acutely aware that vital to achieving our mission—to change the narrative of dementia from Despair to Hope—we need to connect to others with complementary views—our Friends.

I'm Still Here

Dr. John Zeisel

I’m Still Here is a guidebook to Dr. Zeisel’s treatment ideas, showing the possibility and benefits of connecting with an Alzheimer’s patient through their abilities that don’t diminish with time, such as understanding music, art, facial expressions, and touch. By harnessing these capacities, and by using other strategies, it’s possible to offer the person a quality life with connection to others and to the world.

In March 2013, Dr. Zeisel and his work will be the focus of the program airing on public television stations entitled “Hopeful Aging,” bringing his life-changing ideas to a national audience.

Don’t Walk Away: A Care Partner’s Journey

Marilyn Raichle

Marilyn Raichle, author of Don’t Walk Away, grew up in the shadow of Alzheimer's. Nearly everyone in her father’s family and many in her mother’s developed the disease. Her mother Jean told her, “When we get Alzheimer’s, walk away. There is nothing you can do, so live your life and don’t sacrifice it for us.” Instead, Raichle became transformed, embracing the value and joy of people who are living with, not suffering from, dementia.
